One common problem is the start switch going out - The start switch is on the dryer control box. Depending on the type of dryer, either press a button or turn a knob to initiate the dryer's heating. If the start switch stops working, the dryer won't get going or make any loud sounds. Tweak the switch with a meter or continuity checker if you have one handy. If the dryer hums when the start switch is engaged, or if the motor runs only while starting the engage switch, the motor might be poorly made or something might be binding the drum preventing it from turning freely. If the dryer start switch does not have continuity when it is activated, it will need to be replaced.
